Gainsborough Regeneration

Gainsborough has a history which predates Roman times, and up until World War II was a major inland port. It is a laid back, relaxed town with a population of around 23,000. The outskirts of Gainsborough have always been prosperous, but now the town centre is also starting to boom:

Marshall's Yard is a renovation of the Britannia Iron Works, having previously been left abandoned in the town centre for twenty years. Newly opened in 2007, this £39m development has brought over 140,000ft² of retail and leisure floorspace, including Marks & Spencer, Next and an exceptionally luxurious fitness centre. There is also 50,000ft² of new office space, including the new HQ of West Lindsey Council.

Over £20m has been spent on regenerating the old docks, of which Granary Wharf is the showpiece. The riverside has a brand new flood defence system and riverside walk, complete with art galleries & cafés. Many former wharfs and warehouses are being transformed into flats and offices.

On the 31 October 2007, EdF announced that they will be building a £600m pound extension to the West Burton Gas power station just outside Gainsborough which will involve employing 1000 workers over the next four years. Also Gainsborough is just seventeen miles away from the new Robin Hood International Airport. Plans have been submitted to reopen the Finningley railway station in 2011 which will link will make the airport just one stop away from Gainsborough.

Ping, one of the world's leading golf equipment manufacturers, have two superb golf courses on the hills above Gainsborough, along with its European headquarters. Nearby are the popular Market Rasen and Doncaster race courses.
